Abstract:

AbstractIn the municipal archives in Delft are two unique printed lists that inform us about events organised by the Delft civic guard in 1621 and 1631. In 1621 a shooting contest was being held and the prices were several pieces of silver and a number of paintings. These were mainly by Esaias van de Velde, but there were also works by Bartholomeus van Bassen, Cornelis Jacobsz Delff, Joos de Momper together with Jan Brueghel the Elder, Pieter van Bronckhorst, the unknown Pieter Jacobsz Lupert and two works by Hendrick Gerritsz Pot. In the document he titles of the paintings are given, but it is not possible to trace any of these works. In 1631 the civic guard organised a lottery. A large number of paintings were to be won, mainly by painters from Utrecht. The first prize was a series of the five senses by Gerard van Honthorst, Abraham (or maybe Hendrick ?) Bloemaert, Paulus Moreelse, Jan van Bijlert and Hendrick ter Brugghen. There were also paintings by Roelandt Saverij, Adam Willaerts, Joost Cornelisz Droochsloot and Gijsbert and Gillis Hondecoeter. Prom Delft Leonaert Bramer, Cornelis Jacobsz Delff, Anthonie Palamedesz together with Barthomeus van Bassen, Palamedes Palamedesz and Jacob Vosmaer are represented. Also two paintings by Esaias van de Velde are mentioned. Again the titles are given, but they offer no clues to any present whereabouts. From a notarial act it appears that in 1644 again a shooting contest was being held. Now there were only seven paintings to be won. They were supplied by the still life painter Evert van Aelst, and he undoubtedly painted them. No titles are given. Again in 1647 and 1661 shooting contests were being held. Now the prices were simple pieces of silver. According to this pattern, over the decades the populariry of paintings in Delft was diminishing.

Abstract:

Study purpose. This study intended to convert the description of the strategies utilized in street soccer matches to international competitions. Materials and methods. Descriptive quantitative study was used that determined the participants by random sampling of the entire population. It acquired eight Indonesian national team athletes for the Homeless World Cup (HWC). The data was gathered from the six most important HWC matches, including those versus Zimbabwe, Israel, Romania, Brazil, Egypt, and the Netherlands, and examined using match footage. These six contests were chosen for their statistical analysis of decisive victories and defeats. Pearson Correlation was utilized for descriptive and inferential data analysis to evaluate the relationship between variables such as passing, shooting, goal, and goal allowed. Results. As indicated by the high association between passing and shooting accuracy and goal-scoring against the opponent’s goal, passing and shooting were dominating throughout street soccer matches, especially during big events such as the HWC. Conclusions. This study may serve as a resource for all teams in the globe as they develop and implement training program plans to prepare street soccer teams in their various nations.

Abstract:

This review focuses on the technical and social details of production, training, and use of archery equipment by a Native American tribe, the Apaches. The study aims to understand the use of the bow in the Mesolithic and Early and Middle Neolithic societies of the Old World. The paper further describes arrow ballistics. An arrow and bow with similar dimensions and materials to those used by the Apaches was reconstructed and used in ballistic experiments. Shooting and the subsequent model calculation showed that the effective range of arrows made of reed and projected by a bow of medium strength (16–18kg) was not more than approx. 20m. Due to the initial flat part of the ballistic trajectory, such arrows were quite efficient in close-range contests. Within the model calculation, a regression procedure was introduced to determine the arrow air-drag parameters from an ensemble of shots.

Abstract:

Research objective: Analysis of the problem of using the theory of war and peace journalism in reporting mass shootings in the American media on the example of a school shooting in Uvalde. Problem and methods: The article answers the question whether theories about war and peace journalism can be helpful in the analysis of media coverage of mass shootings. The text analyzes how the leading media broadcasters in the U.S. (CNN and Fox News) use war- and peace-oriented mechanisms. The article uses research methods standard for social sciences and humanities, including content analysis with elements of framing analysis, comparative analysis and the case study. Process of argumentation: The starting point for the research was the theories on war and peace journalism by Johan Galtung. The reason for undertaking the research was also the record number of mass shootings in the U.S. in 2021 and the significant importance of the Uvalde shooting in the American public debate on gun control in 2022. The article focuses on the first week of coverage of the shooting. Results: American media use war journalism more often. Coverage is influenced by ideological profile and political affiliation. Political issues and the reconstruction of events come to the fore. Contexts such as victims, solutions, roots of the problem or fate of the perpetrator are discussed less frequently. The shooting in Uvalde became an instrument in the political conflict in which the media took part. Conclusions, innovations, and recommendations: War journalism mechanisms favor media polarization in bipartisan conflict conditions and help show sensational events in a 24-hour cycle. In turn, the mechanisms of peace journalism support reporting on the perpetrator, victims and potential solutions. The article intends to increase awareness of various ways of publicizing extraordinary events and political conflicts and serve for more profound research in the future.

Abstract:

The article deals with the phenomenon of historical reenactment. It is noted that its actualization in the context of the culture of the XX–XXI centuries is due to a change in trends in the development of society. The formation of a visual turn contributes to the emphasis on forms of perception that are focused on interactivity. The "dry" story of past events is extremely difficult to perceive in the context of the spread of digital culture. Mankind is accustomed to the appearance of events that shock, impress, inspire and most of the impact is due to visual stimuli. There are several types of historical reconstruction – "living history" and tournaments. The movement of historical reconstruction in Europe can be divided into historical reenactment, which is divided into "living history" and combat reenactment, as well as creative reconstruction. Instead, in the Ukrainian space more attention is paid to the development of historical reconstruction in the dimension of sports competitions – ISB (historical medieval battles). Reproduction of elements of everyday life can act as a valuable source of information about culture. The spread of the phenomenon of historical reconstruction had an extremely great potential for the socio-cultural sphere. Historical reconstruction can serve as a tool for modifying museum practices. In recent years, there has been a steady trend towards the appearance of theatrical performances that revitalize the work of museum institutions. The actualization of historical reconstruction leads to the formation of festivals associated with historical battles. Often the festival of historical reconstruction includes various competitions and contests – fencing, archery or crossbow shooting, mass battles, a competition for the most authentic uniform. They draw attention to military affairs and history, combining integrative, cognitive functions, as well as being a part of leisure. The results of the study can be practically applied in the field of cultural management, project activities and in the work with the preservation of cultural heritage – material and spiritual.

QUINN, GENEVIEVE. "Evolution and Electoral Implications of Congressional Gun Control Issue Framing: “From Crime Control to Mass Shootings”." Journal of Policy History 34, no.3 (June6, 2022): 440–72. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0898030622000124.

Full text

Abstract:

AbstractThis paper traces the political development of Congressional gun control issue framing (with a specific focus from the early 1990s to the present), demonstrating that there have been two primary contexts in which gun control policy has been debated over this time frame: as a component of general crime control and as a specific response to mass shooting events. It identifies the primary historical, political, and electoral forces shaping the gun control debate in a given period while distinguishing the critical changes that drove the evolution from a crime control to a mass shooting focus. It assesses the degree of policy coherence and electoral salience specific to each context, illuminating why “gun control as crime control” had bipartisan Congressional support in the early 1990s and identifying what comparative disadvantages hinder the mass shooting focus of the present while also recognizing that the latter unfolded against a backdrop of heighted partisan polarization. The paper concludes that although one cannot compare the crime control and mass shooting framing contexts in a political vacuum, the electoral implications particular to each are relevant for understanding legislative action or inaction in Congress over the past thirty years, if more so in some periods than others.

Abstract:

This study specifically discusses the representation of Orlando shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in the modern U.S. history taking place on June 11, 2016 in Florida, including the portrayal of the Muslim offender and the similarities and differences in contents of the shooting coverage in online news articles of two media, Fox News and Al Jazeera. Online news articles about the shooting from Fox News and Al Jazeera were selected as the data in this study. Social Actor Representation of Van Leeuwen (2008), News Schemata of Van Dijk (1986), and the analysis of socio-cultural practices of Fairclough (1995) were used to analyze data. The results of analysis showed that there were eight representational categories used by both media to portray the offender. In addition, both media provided similar coverage about the details and chronology of the shooting, the previous investigations on the offender, and comments from witnesses and the owner of the club, but differed in presenting the offender’s personal details and his association to ISIS terrorist group. Lastly, there were three socio-cultural practices – institutional context, situational context, and societal context – that explained the shooting and its different coverage in both media.

Abstract:

The article presents sport shooting in Poland against a socio-political background. First, Polish society after the anti-communist breakthrough is diagnosed as a country lacking social capital and social trust in particular. In this context, membership in sport clubs, treated as a form of social involvement, is very desirable, as it expands the network of social cooperation. However, being a sport shooter is also associated with access to weapons, which is always controversial, even if Poland has low rates of access to firearms for citizens. The authors conducted research (CAWI, N = 253) on sport shooters in Poland. The results (opinions of sport shooters) are analyzed in three contexts: possession of a weapon and attitude towards a weapon (motivation to engage in sport shooting), sport shooting clubs (analysis of sport shooting organizations in Poland), and the image of a sport shooter (assessment of sport shooters’ image in Polish society). A basic problem that emerges from the empirical analysis is the heterogeneous interpretation of sport shooting by the shooters themselves. Shooting can be seen in terms of sport (an activity aimed at self-improvement and competition) as well as an activity with out-of-sport goals (patriotic, educational, and defensive). Different definitions of joint activity may lead to interpretative (of meaning) tensions and ultimately to conflicts within the examined category of people.

Abstract:

The fractionation and vertical distribution of risk elements in soil profiles at a shooting range characterized by alkaline soil were studied. High loading rates of lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb) were observed in the upper 30 cm of soil. Copper (Cu) contents are elevated compared to control soil but do not exceed guideline limits for agricultural soil. Zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni) did not occur in excessive levels; however, easily mobilizable Zn fraction was higher in surface samples, whereas Ni appears to be relatively immobile. Pb and Cu loading in surface soils can be identified as fraction distributions are easily distinguished from those of non-polluted soils. At the firing line Cu, Sb and Zn are most abundant whereas Ni and Pb are concentrated at the target zone. S equential extraction procedures proved effective for the monitoring of shooting range soils. However, data should be backed by other scenario dependent analyses to confirm the environmental fate of shooting range contaminants.

Abstract:

As 3-point shooting in the NBA continues to increase, the importance of perimeter defense has never been greater. Perimeter defenders are often evaluated by their ability to tightly contest shots, but how exactly does contesting a jump shot cause a decrease in expected shooting percentage, and can we use this insight to better assess perimeter defender ability? In this paper we analyze over 50,000 shot trajectories from the NBA to explain why, in terms of impact on shot trajectories, shooters tend to miss more when tightly contested. We present a variety of results derived from this shot trajectory data. Additionally, pairing trajectory data with features such as defender height, distance, and contest angle, we are able to evaluate not just perimeter defenders, but also shooters’ resilience to defensive pressure. Utilizing shot trajectories and corresponding modeled shot-make probabilities, we are able to create perimeter defensive metrics that are more accurate and less variable than traditional metrics like opponent field goal percentage.

Abstract:

Ma bamboo (Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro) is a major bamboo species cultivated in southern China with high economic, ecological, and social value. However, highly dense forests and reasonable structures in bamboo forests have unclear and adverse effects on light transmittance and forest productivity that are not adequately understood. Here, we investigated varied light-intensity treatments during different phases of shoot emergence and development on Ma bamboo shoots. The amount of total chlorophyll, carotenoids, gas exchange indicators, and biosynthetic products were also compared to explore the response mechanism of shoot germination on downstream biochemical pathways. We found that compared to the L0 treatment (full sunlight), the number of germinated bamboo shoots under the L1 treatment (40% light) increased significantly by 44.07% and 101.32% in the shooting initial-phase and metaphase, respectively (p < 0.05). Additionally, the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) during the shooting initial-phase and metaphase was the highest in the L1 treatment, while the L4 (10% light) and L0 treatments inhibited chlorophyll synthesis. Further, the accumulation of leaf carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) was higher in the L1 treatment than in other treatments. Ma bamboo showed rich carbohydrate contents under L0 and L1 treatments in the shooting initial-phase and metaphase. Principal component analysis (PCA) also revealed that the L1 treatment positively correlated with bamboo shoot germination and biochemical activity during the shooting periods. Ultimately, our data suggest that the L1 treatment is the most optimal for promoting bamboo shoot germination, providing a scientific basis for cultivating shoot-used bamboo forests in southern China.

The case study presented in this paper is particularly critical not only for the conservation conditions, but especially for the environmental conditions: the Catacombs of San Vittorino have complex conditions of recovery, because of the nature of the artefact and because of the poor lighting of the main environments. For this particularity, a workflow was developed that, in order to achieve the creation of an immersive device navigable by digital viewers such as Oculus Rift or similar, required the start-up of shooting by laser scanning, and then treat the point cloud with different software, in order to obtain a satisfactory result that, in other contexts, could have started easily from a photogrammetric shooting.

Abstract:

In Lithuanian, the instrument of verbs of shooting may be formulated in two different syntactic constructions: the instrumental case or the preposition iš. These two constructions are often considered to be synonyms. A detailed study of numerous contexts where these constructions appear shows that they are not equivalent but correspond to two different representations of the event shooting: the instrumental case defines the process, providing it with qualitative determinations, whereas the preposition iš constructs the exteriorization of the projectile. We will show that these hypotheses on the semantics of the instrumental case and of the preposition iš permit one to account for the different uses of the two constructions and for their differences in acceptability, should differences arise. This analysis is based on the Theory of Predicative and Enunciative Operations of A. Culioli. It argues for the thesis that grammar and lexicon are not to be dissociated.

News coverage of the shootings in Orlando highlighted a tension between the two frames broadcasters used in their reporting. Was this a hom*ophobic hate crime or was this terrorism? Many elided the difficulty by calling it hom*ophobic terrorism, but this could not resolve the tension. This article contends that because terrorism is closely equated with radicalized Muslims, the tension was sublimated into an existing orientalist frame where hom*ophobia became a marker of fundamentalist Islamic culture. Instead, this article argues, these two frames should not be taken as cause and effect but as problems that share a common ailment: the presence of toxic masculinities. Beginning from a position that sees masculinity as constituted through violence in patriarchal culture, this article works through the idea that when there is a disillusionment with violence, masculinity under patriarchy turns toxic. What emerges then is not merely violence but “rage” as the praxis of toxic masculinities.

Abstract:

AbstractThe literature concerning recreational landscapes is substantial, but its contents are heavily biased towards the parks and gardens of the aristocratic and land-owning classes. Surprisingly, very little of a landscape historical nature has been published on the countrysides created and maintained for the purpose of grouse shooting, even though the areas concerned are some of the most admired and most ecologically sensitive parts of Britain. The pursuit of grouse shooting has been followed in the Yorkshire Dales for more than 250 years and the activity (in this context ‘sport’ is an emotive term) and its varied impacts upon the landscape have been conditioned by a variety of factors. Some are social, and relate to perceptions of what constitute acceptable forms of upper class recreation and association; some are technological and involve the development of firearms; some are logistical and pertain to improvements in access to the upland grouse moors, while some are ecological and concern the improvement and deterioration of the habitat and fluctuations in the grouse population. All these factors found expression in the landscape, on the grand scale, by the systematic burning, swaling or swiddening of the moors and at the local level, for example, by constructing butts in relation to topography, prevailing wind direction and the flight paths favoured by the game.

Abstract:

Abstract The aim of the present study was to identify the importance of floorball tactical variables to predict ball possession effectiveness, when controlling quality of opposition and game periods. The sample was composed by 1500 ball possessions, corresponding to 14 games randomly selected from the International Championships played during 2008 and 2010 (World Championship, Four nations tournament and classificatory phases for World Championship) by teams from different competition levels (HIGH, INTERMEDIATE and LOW). The effects of the predictor variables on successful ball possessions according to the three game contexts (HIGH vs. HIGH; HIGH vs. LOW; LOW vs. LOW games) were analyzed using Binomial Logistic Regressions. The results showed no interaction with the game period. In HIGH vs. HIGH games, quality of opposition showed an association with ball possession effectiveness with ending zone, offensive system, possession duration, height of shooting and defensive pressures previous to the shot. In HIGH vs. LOW games the important factors were the starting zone, possession duration, defensive pressure previous to the last pass and to the shot, technique of shooting and the number players involved in each ball possession. Finally, in LOW vs. LOW games, the results emphasized the importance of starting and ending zones, the number of passes used and the technique of shooting. In conclusion, elite floorball performance is mainly affected by quality of opposition showing different game patterns in each context that should be considered by coaches when preparing practices and competitions.

Abstract:

The research subject is the sequence of a shooter’s actions at the firing line. It is believed that the repetitions of an action improve the speed of its performance and eventually - its preciseness. Unnecessary movements stop being made, an action stereotype is being developed, as well as a certain algorithm. A shooter should follow this sequence of actions when shooting, and develop it in the process of training. The more experienced the shooter is, the shorter the sequence becomes, since its length depends on the experience. The development of the algorithm is promoted by the study of the elements of shooting and repeated practicing of dry and charged shots. The formation of an optimal algorithm will be more effective if guided by a supervisor. The process of formation of the sequence of actions with firearms is determined by the use of various techniques of organizing and giving firearms training lessons. The use of individual, group and mixed activities allows the teacher to optimize the process of formation of the algorithm of actions in accordance with individual characteristics of students. Motivation and self consciousness of students become significant for the formation of the algorithm. At the same time, the contents of the educational process should be aimed not only at the formation of technical actions with a gun, but at the formation of the tactics and appropriateness of its usage. Successful performance of training shooting will indicate the completeness of formation of the algorithm of actions with firearms.

Abstract:

After an overview of the well-known aspects of Ralph Ellison’s interest in and connections to the works and literary ideas of the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky, this paper reveals the hitherto unknown depths of Ellison’s research into and usage of the works and aesthetic theories of the Russian writer as he applied them to American and African American literary and social contexts. Making use of archival materials (including Ellison’s correspondence, draft of his unfinished novel Three Days Before the Shooting..., highlighting and marginalia in the books from his personal library, which includes numerous works by and about Dostoevsky), this reassessment addresses the role of the Russian classics, and in particular, of Dostoevsky, in Ellison’s intellectual formation, the role that Dostoevsky played in Ellison’s literary relationship with Richard Wright; the ways that Ellison’s interests in the blues, jazz and other folk and vernacular forms of African American culture were filtered through his analysis of nineteenth-century Russian culture; and the Dostoevskyan origins of a number of fictional scenarios that would find their way into Three Days Before the Shooting... The essay concludes with a discussion of the correspondence between Ellison and Joseph Frank, Dostoevsky’s biographer.

Abstract This article draws on Judith Butler's theories of violence and grief in order to outline a self-reflexive narrative of teaching and speaking about the Atlanta shootings of March 2021 as a queer and feminist studies scholar of Japanese studies in Hong Kong. The article briefly explains how teaching about this occurrence of anti-Asian violence in East Asia might lead to important discussions of multiple imperialisms within/around Asia, while providing background on the broader potential of Asian American studies for pedagogical contexts within Asia. However, through a description of the author's own coming into being as a racialized, gendered subject in the act of teaching about the Atlanta shootings in Hong Kong, the focus is on a highly particular account of how grief and vulnerability might offer forms of political solidarity that are not defined by roles as distinct subjects belonging to recognizable groups and communities.

A major limitation of the white-rot fungus is its sensitivity during biodegradation of mixed matrix explosive pollutants and the scale of Kachia military shooting since 1967, Nigeria. The amplified 16S rRNA gene of each microbial isolate was processed for sequencing and characterization with Gene Bank database. Fungal species heavy metal reduction in increasing order of Aspergillus niger > Trametes versicolor > Rhizopus spp > Phanorochate chrysoporium > Penicillium spp were identified. The total explosive contents shows a significant difference for all locations in both dry and wet seasons (P<0.05) using Anova test. Microbial fungi consortium (MFC) bioremediate heavy metal significantly at 61.7% relative to isolated fungi species because of the lateral gene transfer/co-metabolism, where Trametes versicolor and Aspergillus niger act as gene mediators. MFC growth in 1% mineral salt medium munitions was significance than fungal species isolate. Abstract:

Abstract This paper makes a comparative study of recruitment advertisem*nts between China and the United States from the perspective of Multimodal Cognitive Critical Analysis. Based on the analysis of metaphor and metonymy, the paper reveals the differences between them in contents, narrative strategies and combination of semiotic resources. In terms of contents, there are varying degrees of emphasis on military mission, income, values, and mental health. In terms of narrative strategies, China adopts a “parental” strategy, while the United States adopts a “corporate” strategy. As to the combination of semiotic resources, China and the United States have difference in their use of cartoons and posters, and adopt different shooting angles of posters. This study holds that military conscription is not only a political activity, but also a platform to construct positive image of Chinese soldiers and demonstrate the strength of China’s military forces. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly adjust the above factors according to the characteristics of the era and reading habits of the viewers.

Abstract:

The assessment of the effect of tree age on leaves is usually limited by the difficulty of sampling sun leaves from tall ageing trees. In this study, we investigated tree age-related effects on sun leaves in a chronosequence of beech (fa*gus sylvatica L.) stands. The effects of stand age on leaf mass to area ratio (LMA), chlorophyll (Chl), epidermal polyphenols (EPhen), nitrogen and carbon contents in sun leaves were investigated in 17 even-aged stands distributed into six age classes (14–175 years old). Chl and EPhen were assessed in vivo with SPAD and Dualex portable leaf-clips respectively. Leaves were sampled by shooting and sun leaves were identified based on criteria obtained from a vertical profile of the ratio abaxial vs adaxial EPhen across the canopy. Sun leaves were characterised by a high and similar adaxial and abaxial EPhen contents, high LMA value and low mass-based Chl content. These sun leaf characteristics, together with leaf nitrogen and carbon contents, were not significantly affected by stand age. Along the chronosequence, beech trees invested a stable fraction of leaf mass into nitrogen, carbon, Chl and EPhen with decreasing leaf size, i.e. dry mass and area.

Abstract:

Exposure to impulsive noise sources is common during routine operations military contexts. This type of noise exposure is prevalent in training procedures carried out with small caliber firearms in both indoor and outdoor settings. Typically, hearing protection is required to mitigate hearing damage risk to military personnel. Consequently, proper prescription of hearing protection required bioenvironmental engineers and industrial hygienists to travel and collect data in situ which can be time consuming and expensive. As such, the researchers at the 711th Human Performance Wing of the United States Air Force Research Lab have developed a software named the Shooting Range Impulse Noise Calculator (ShRINC). The ShRINC software provides the capability to simulate high fidelity acoustic levels within indoor and outdoor shooting ranges with directional impulsive noise sources. This is accomplished by leveraging principles from Image Source Room (ISM) based room acoustics and combining them with weapon source models with complicated directivity patterns. In this work, validation will be completed by comparing results collected in a highly reverberant facility with the M4A1 firearm operating blank rounds. An investigation into the proper order for the ISM solver will be analyzed and sound exposure levels between the simulation and measured data will be compared.

Full text

Abstract:

Non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) dynamics in different bamboo types underlie the different management practices of bamboo plantations. The changes in moisture, soluble sugars, and starch content in response to phenological variations in different types of bamboo were measured to reveal the NSC dynamics in different bamboo forests for high yield. It was reported for the first time that new leaves of monopodial bamboo started sprouting after the completion of branching, while sympodial bamboo extended new leaves and branches simultaneously. NSC accumulation for shooting lasted about eight months for monopodial bamboo but only a short interval of two to three months for sympodial bamboo. The moisture content in different types of bamboo showed a similar trend of increasing from March to July and then decreasing until the coming January. From March to May, particularly in March, irrigation was required for the shooting of monopodial bamboo, whereas the shoot buds in sympodial bamboo showed sprouting, branching, and leafing. Total NSCs in different bamboo types remained relatively high in March, gradually decreased to the lowest in July, and then increased continuously until the coming January. Average soluble sugar and starch contents showed the same trend as the total NSCs in different types of bamboo. During the period from March to July, large amount of photoassimilates were required for shooting and height growth and then for branching and leafing in monopodial bamboo. Abundant photoassimilates were also required for branching, leafing, and shoot bud differentiation, as well as for subsequent shoot germination in sympodial bamboo. Thus, fertilizer application to both monopodial and sympodial bamboo plantations should be scheduled in early May and late July. Given the moisture, soluble sugar, starch, and total NSC content, January was the best season for harvesting monopodial bamboo for high production and future growth, whereas for sympodial bamboo, November was the best season.

Abstract:

Recently, beauty YouTube usage has been on the rise, and there have been diverse studies. However, it has been hard to find a preference study by the number of video views. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate what factors are preferred by age as the number of video views increases and facilitate the growth and development of beauty contents through the production of a video which adopted such preferred factors. For this, previous studies were analyzed, and the results were classified into both subjective and objective indexes. In terms of objective indexes, a shooting location, supplies, model availability(Y/N), video editing, videos, contents and beauty creator’s characteristics were derived. Among a total of 204 domestic character and stage makeup videos as of July 1, 2020, top 5 videos in terms of views were analyzed. In contrast, subjective indexes were divided into informativity, playfulness, friendliness, professionalism and attractiveness. A questionnaire survey was performed against a total of 60 respondents in their 10-30s in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do from July 20 to August 31, 2020. The collected data were analyzed, using SPSS 21.0, and the results found the followings: Among those in their 10-30s, ‘playfulness’, ‘professionalism’, ‘attractiveness’, ‘friendliness’ and ‘informativity’ had an influence on the number of video views. Specifically, supplies, time, expert, celebrity, product information and knowhow were influential. Furthermore, this study confirmed that a video can be produced with the preferred factors derived through analysis. It is anticipated that the study results would be useful in contents production as a reference by providing future beauty creators with the factors which can increase the number of video views and make a contribution to the development of beauty contents.

Abstract:

We determined the amount of lead shot left after shooting, in the sediment and also the occurrence of lead shot in the gizzards of waterfowl shot at Lake Cowal. We also investigated levels of lead in livers. Livers and gizzards of 342 ducks, Pacific black duck (96), grey teal (122), maned duck (102), pink-eared duck (15) and Australasian shoveler (7), were collected during the 1987 duck shooting season. Few birds had ingested shot (1.5%). Black ducks had more grit, the size of shot, in their gizzards than did grey teal or maned duck. Total grit contents in the gizzards were of a similar weight for black duck and maned ducks but less for grey teal. Two ducks had lead levels in the liver indicative of lead poisoning (>6 ppm) wet weight. Lead levels in the liver were generally low, 0.32 0.76 ppm (mean + s.d.). There were no differences between species or sexes in levels of lead in livers. There was also no difference between lead levels of ducks shot on opening day compared to those shot 4 weeks later. Crude density estimates, extrapolated from 77 samples of sediment (800 cm2), averaged 16 000 shot per hectare for areas close to where hunters camped. Crude density, extrapolated from 100 samples, was 3400 shot per hectare for areas of low hunter density.

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental project in which media students created a short video. The students in groups of 4 or 5 used concept maps for collected their ideas about organizing the project. The analysis of the concept maps revealed that two groups were product-oriented, one group was workflow-oriented, and two groups used concepts that belonged to both categories. The contents of the concept maps also reflected students′ prior knowledge and skills related to the task. In a joint discussion of the concept maps, students created a to-do list for shooting the video, which was an important activity to build common knowledge. This project confirms that the use of concept maps is a useful tool for developing students’ professional skills.

Plants 13, no.3 (January30, 2024): 410. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/plants13030410.

Full text

Abstract:

To explore the regulation mechanism of endogenous phytohormones on rhizome bud germination in Cephalostachyum pingbianense, the contents of IAA, ABA, GA, and CTK in seven above- and under-ground bamboo structure components were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The results showed that a higher content of IAA, GA, and CTK all year was found in above-ground components and dormant rhizome buds. Meanwhile, a higher ABA content in young shoots and a lower ABA content in the culm base and dormant rhizome buds were detected during the peak period of shooting. The amounts of emerging shoots and the grown bamboo culms were positively correlated with the content of IAA and the ratio of IAA/ABA and (IAA + CTK + GA)/ABA, while they were negatively correlated with the ratio of CTK/IAA in dormant rhizome buds. The all-year high contents of IAA (19–31 ng/g) and ABA (114–144 ng/g) in rhizome buds, as well as interactions among four hormones, may be the key physiological mechanisms to maintain rhizome bud germination throughout the year in C. pingbianense. As C. pingbianense is a special bamboo species of multi-season shoot sprouting, the above results may supplement scientific data for a comprehensive understanding of physiological mechanisms within the bamboo subfamily.

Abstract:

Abstract It has been previously observed that basketball free-throw (FT) shooting efficiency decreases towards the end of the game. The aim of the current study was to explore possible determinants for this distinctive pattern during close games (point differential of equal or under 2 points during the final minute of the game). A sample of shots attempted by 92 players in the Spanish professional basketball league (ACB) was collected. Several personal (age, experience, playing position and career FT percentage) and contextual (team ability, competition stage, game location, seconds remaining and score differential) variables were considered for the analysis of the data. The effects of the predictor variables on the players’ performance were analyzed according to two game contexts (FT attempted during the final minute or the last pair of FTs) using binomial logistic regression analysis. The results showed that during the final minute the only statistically significant variable was being in the center playing position (OR = 1.58), which decreased the FT shooting percentage compared to forwards and guards. In addition, the results during the last pair of FTs showed that the playing position of guards (OR = 1.70) and centers (OR = 2.22) was significant (a decrease in their FT percentage). Conversely, the score differential when tied (OR = -1.17) or losing (OR = -2.43) was significant, reflecting a lower probability of missing the shot. The results were interpreted and discussed from the viewpoints of crisis theory and the literature on choking in athletic performance.

Abstract:

This qualitative study identifies police interactions with gun violence co-victims as a crucial, overlooked component of police unresponsiveness, particularly in minority communities where perceptions of police illegitimacy and legal estrangement are relatively high. Gun violence co-victims in three cities participated in online surveys, in which they described pervasive disregard by police in the aftermath of their loved ones' shooting victimization. We build on the checklist model that has improved public safety outcomes in other complex, high-intensity professional contexts to propose a checklist for police detectives to follow in the aftermath of gun violence. To build the checklist, we also reviewed the general orders of five police departments to better understand what guidance, if any, is currently given to police personnel regarding how they should interact with gun violence victims.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on covert foreshadowing in Pushkin’s novel in verse “Eugene Onegin”. With covert foreshadowing, the shadow doesn't emerge until the light of a past event illuminates the hidden clues. Covert foreshadowing is only revealed post factum, when the event that already has happened elucidates a hidden meaning of an earlier episode, phrase or word that at first glance is not realized as related to the future event. Covert foreshadowing is based on veiled parallels and echoes of meaning. The paper discusses covert foreshadowing in “Eugene Onegin” based on the inversion of direct and figurative meaning, emblematic presentation of the theme, camouflaged phonetic preparation of the keyword of the theme by alliteration. The author argues that 1) a reference to Freischütz, a German opera that depicts a shooting contest for the maiden’s hand is a covert foreshadowing prefiguring Onegin's shooting Lensky; 2) Lensky’s capture of his own rook as a suicidal chess move is a covert foreshadowing of his future suicidal action when he challenges Onegin to a duel; 3) mentioning of trochee in the ironic phrase about Onegin’s superficial education is a covert foreshadowing prefiguring the appearance of trochee in the form of a poetic meter used in The Maidens’ Song; 4) the motif of knife conveyed in Tatyana’s dream by a real object – the murder weapon (symbol of death), reappears in the final scene of the novel in the form of anagram, thus prefiguring Onegin’s symbolic death.

Abstract:

Abstract The years following the Civil Rights Movement witnessed the erection of African American monuments in traditionally white-dominated public spaces, especially in the South. While this terrestrial integration acknowledges the historic centrality of race, their juxtaposition with former Confederate monuments ironically created a parallel “dual heritage.” Around the turn of the twenty-first century, newer types of counter-monuments contest prior memorialization and proffer a more nuanced history. Since the 2015 Charleston church shooting, calls for removal of old Confederate monuments have been dynamized by the Black Lives Matter movement, particularly following the murder of George Floyd. Using a framework contrasting dialogic with anti-monumental monuments, this essay analyzes the past half-century of African American monument construction to reconsider desegregation of the memorial landscape. In doing so, it further explores new ways of anti-monumental commemoration in the post-Floyd era.

The ash cloud, blown by the prevailing winds, moved down over northern Europe. European air traffic authorities, following well established and widely published safety protocols, began shutting down the air transport system due to the well known hazard of volcano ash. The shutdown lasted 6 days and soon became an unequal political contest between airline money on the one side and regulatory science on the other. In a classic case of shooting the messenger bringing bad news the responsible airline parties tried to shift the blame for shutdown to the regulators, while nervous governments quailed before the bullying of the airline executives.

Following the tragedy of another shooting that happened in a visibly Queer space, this study explores how Queerness in rural spaces generates a spectrum of visibility. Men in Place (2019) by Miriam Abelson and Out in the Country: Youth Media and Queer Visibility in Rural America (2009) by Mary Gray, personal narratives/podcasts cultivated by Country Queers, and “place histories” such as Brandon Teena and Matthew Shepard which were highly visible cases of rural Queer overkill, are used as objects of study to explore the role and function of visibility in rural contexts. After exploring these rural Queer-centric narratives, I generated three thematic categories: working to preserve Queer comfort in rural spaces, identity work of rural Queerness, and fears and spaces of violence. I conclude by using the three categories to offer three implications for educational practices to complicate our understanding of Queer visibility in rural schools.

Abstract:

AbstractWar experiences are a material of political currency, invoked, appropriated, and ‘written’ in particular configurations to sustain, complicate, and contest narratives about war. This occurs through and within the same relations of power that are intrinsic to the conduct of war as war-experiencing subjects comprise a political vocabulary of selves and others that populate and operate within war’s wider social (re)production. To track these power relations and consider implications for how dominant accounts of war can be complicated and contested, the article is grounded in an analysis of the visual regimes at work in footage, photographs, and testimony relating to the shooting of a group of people by an American Apache helicopter in Baghdad, Iraq in 2007. The event was publicised on a dedicated website and dubbed ‘Collateral Murder’ by WikiLeaks in 2010. Analysis of the website reveals how visual modes and the experiences of war subjects accompany each other, revealing war in contrasting locations of sight and violence: the ‘view from above’, the ‘view from below’, and the view of the ‘on-the-ground’ soldier eyewitness. Taken together these discursively produce ‘Collateral Murder’ and contest the dominance of war known through the experience of those who wage it ‘from above’.

Abstract:

Abstract This work is devoted to the microbiological analysis of meat and by-products of hazel grouse in the conditions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), depending on the seasons. The material for the study was the carcasses and internal organs of hazel grouses, obtained in hunting brigades and hunters during the spring-autumn shooting of birds in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Samples of muscle tissue, lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, the contents of the stomach and intestines of hazel grouses were taken from 29 birds for the isolation of E.coli, salmonella, staphylococci and Cl. perfringens. According to the research results, it was found that the intensity of bacterial contamination depends on the season, that the greatest contamination of E. coli, salmonella, staphylococci occurs in the spring, made it possible to determine the species composition of the microflora of the organs and tissues of hazel grouse by the seasons of the year.

Chang, Yuchou, and Hong Lin. "Irrelevant frame removal for scene analysis using video hyperclique pattern and spectrum analysis." Journal of Advanced Computer Science & Technology 5, no.1 (February6, 2016): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.14419/jacst.v5i1.4035.

Abstract:

Video often include frames that are irrelevant to the scenes for recording. These are mainly due to imperfect shooting, abrupt movements of camera, or unintended switching of scenes. The irrelevant frames should be removed before the semantic analysis of video scene is performed for video retrieval. An unsupervised approach for automatic removal of irrelevant frames is proposed in this paper. A novel log-spectral representation of color video frames based on Fibonacci lattice-quantization has been developed for better description of the global structures of video contents to measure similarity of video frames. Hyperclique pattern analysis, used to detect redundant data in textual analysis, is extended to extract relevant frame clusters in color videos. A new strategy using the k-nearest neighbor algorithm is developed for generating a video frame support measure and an h-confidence measure on this hyperclique pattern based analysis method. Evaluation of the proposed irrelevant video frame removal algorithm reveals promising results for datasets with irrelevant frames.

Grobe,ChristopherA. "“A Terrible Art of Sharp-Shooting at the Audience”: Teaching the Shock of Modernist Drama via the Play of Ideas." Modern Drama 66, no.2 (June1, 2023): 158–78. http://dx.doi.org/10.3138/md-66-2-1279.

Abstract:

One of the hardest things to convey to present-day readers of modernist drama is the power it had to shock turn-of-the-century audiences. Defining shock as a “structure of feeling” (Raymond Williams) that was pursued in especially teachable ways by the modernist “play of ideas,” this essay shares a set of pedagogical strategies for helping students to feel this shock while also reflecting on the political implications of an art committed to shock. Among these teaching strategies are two attempts to set this “terrible art” (G. B. Shaw) in new, revealing contexts: (1) comparing the modernist theater to non-theatrical practices that attach ideas to structures of feeling besides shock, and (2) pairing modernist plays that “shock” their audience in pursuit of a feminist politics with contemporary plays that “destroy the audience” (Young Jean Lee) in pursuit of an anti-racist politics. The result is not to lionize shock as a universal ideal, but to explore it as a tactic—useful in some settings, harmful in others; always distributing its benefits and its costs unevenly.
